Online Virtual Global Internship in Various Locations:

Is traveling not an option for you currently? You can still have an international experience! Build your resume, gain cross-cultural skills, and earn academic credit through a virtual global internship.

You will intern part-time while taking a Mason course online to earn academic credit. While full-time internships may be possible, most are part-time for 12-20+ hours per week and taken for 3 credits. To work with the time differences in each location, you will have projects to complete by specific deadlines and might not be online at the same time as your supervisor. You will work out with your supervisor what your asynchronous schedule looks like and what check-ins you will have together/with a team, most likely once a week. This will look different for each organization and based on student availability.

The program cost is the same as in-state tuition and fees for 3 credits. 6 credits may be possible on a case-by-case basis with our partners.

There are 3 different partner options for virtual internships. Click on the green partner links below for more information and examples for each partner.

Placements are customized based on each intern's specific interests and goals, and focus on developing career-readiness and professional competencies. In addition to a resume clinic, interview coaching, and the CliftonStrengths Online Talent Assessment.  Includes education/tutoring opportunities in Morocco location and possibly others.
Each of these internship partners also host in-person Summer internships, if you are interested in traveling to with this partner in the future.

Credits

3 credits (6 may be possible on a case-by-case basis)

You will take an online, asynchronous class during your internship in order to receive credits. Your grade is based on the work you complete for the Mason internship class online, which will include a final report from your internship supervisor.

All virtual internships posted are typically for 3 credits and you must complete 45 hours of work per credit. However, some companies/organizations may be comfortable with shorter or longer internships. Email gointern@gmu.edu if you are interested in a  6 credit option instead, and our staff can share possibilities for that location and your field.

  • 3 credits: 135 hours minimum. This is possible for all internships listed. This comes out to 11+ hours/week if the internship spans 12 weeks but more hours/week for shorter internships. It may also be possible to condense the internship which will mean more hours per week.
  • 6 credits: 270 hours. May be possible for some internships listed.

In order to receive academic credit, you are required to take a corresponding Mason course online during the internship. Course options are listed below.

Course Options:

Default Credit: You are automatically approved to receive one of the course credit options below for your internship. Again, 6 may be possible for longer internships.

Undergraduate Credit Graduate Credit
Seeking Different Credits: Students wanting different credits can petition their department, however, these approvals are not guaranteed, and there may be additional eligibility requirements. Look up potential alternative credits and their requirements in the Mason Course Catalog.  There will be a questionnaire in the application process where students indicate the credit they would like to receive and we will provide you with the form required for approval if they indicate they are seeking a different credit. This process is handled entirely by the student, not by GEO.

In the past, GEO internship students on various programs have been individually approved by their departments for these credits. Please note that these credits requirements may be applicable in some locations but not others based on career field availability and flexibility of placement logistics in the country. Check with gointern@gmu.edu to discuss more.

Note for School of Business Applicants:
The School of Business has specific credit policy for internships for their majors which excludes internships that are not offered in the School of Business from a student’s degree. Students with a major in the School of Business have the following options:
1. Enroll in a School of Business internship course (this requires you meet their qualifications). You will be responsible for the tuition for that course and the GEO Internship program fee. Speak to your Business advisor for more information on how this may apply to your degree requirements.

OR

2. Earn INTS 390 or CONF 370 credit for general elective credit. You will be responsible only for the GEO Internship program fee.

OR

3. Earn internship course credits towards your minor or double major if it is outside the School of Business. The GEO internship credits will apply to credits in the minor or double major. Consult with this department to discuss if they will count prior to participation.

Either way, you are encouraged to talk to your academic advisor about this now to make the most informed decision for you.

Internship Placements:

The internship component involves students working part-time at an international organization or company. Once accepted by GEO, students will work closely with one of our partner organization's placement officers to identify areas of interest, and to secure an internship. After being accepted by our partners, students are guaranteed an internship in one of the 2-3 fields the partner will ask them to rank. For virtual internships, a student and the company supervisor will determine together the timing of the internship, especially considering time differences and class schedules. Students will likely have an independent project or task to complete during their available time, to account for time differences, and the nature of virtual work. However, they would have scheduled meetings with their supervisor about once a week, in addition to receiving email guidance throughout the week. This may differ slightly based on the company, the type of work, and the student's availability.

Students may inquire about the type of internship opportunities in their area of study as well as about the complete support services offered during the program to their GEO Program Administrator. Within your inquiry, please include your major, career goals, and what knowledge you wish to gain from the internship experience.

Program Payments

The full program fee is charged to your Mason Student Account. Students pay the Global Education Office (GEO) Program Fee as advertised in two payments (Application Deposit + Final Payment).

Application Deposit: A $200 non-refundable Application Deposit must be received by the application deadline. This fee is paid online through the MasonAbroad application system and is included in the program fee.

Final Payment: The final balance payment is made through the Mason Bill + Payment system. Payment is due according to the Mason Payment Schedule.  The amount due is the difference of your Program Cost minus the $200 Application Deposit you will have already paid.

Note:
• You can make your final payment in the Mason Bill + Payment system even if you do not see the GEO program charge on your Student Account.
• George Mason University applies payments to outstanding charges first. If you have an outstanding balance from a previous semester, your payments will first go to paying that charge. You will still be responsible for the GEO charge.

Financial Aid:
In most cases, financial aid (federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans) can be used to finance study abroad. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the Office of Financial Aid to review their financial aid package. The Office of Financial Aid is the only office that can determine your aid eligibility.

Meeting with your financial aid officer prior to applying to study abroad will help you understand if, how much, and when your aid can be used to study abroad.

Confirmation of your financial aid award may not be available until registration and billing for the term in question is final. If aid eligibility changes, or the amount of aid disbursed is lower than anticipated, students are responsible for all remaining account balances or risk late fees, holds on their accounts, and program dismissal.

To assist students in the processing of their financial aid, GEO will communicate with the Office of Financial Aid those students who plan to utilize financial aid for their specific study abroad program through their application with GEO.  Please note there is no guarantee to students that their aid can be utilized for their specific study abroad program.

If you plan to use federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans to finance your study abroad, you must:

• Mark “Yes” to “Do you plan to use Financial Aid to finance your program (federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans)?” in your profile in MasonAbroad.gmu.edu.

After acceptance:
•Complete the Financial Aid questionnaire item in your application.
Schedule an appointment with your financial aid officer.

* Students must be enrolled at least half-time for federal loans and the majority of grant funds. Please refer to the Financial Aid website for a definition of half-time for undergraduate and graduate students.

VA Benefits: This program is ineligible for VA Benefits.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy: All participants are bound by the Mason GEO Withdrawal and Refund Policy.
