Cultural Tour - Holland
Mason Cultural Tour: The Netherlands and Iceland

Explore the "other" Netherlands regions of Delft with its iconic porcelain. Delft lies on the River Schie had has a picturesque Old Town ringed by canals. Also visit Rotterdam, Gouda, and Kinderdjk in the South to see the windmills from the 1700s. Then cross the border into Antwerp, Belgium to learn about the diamond trade and sample the famous Belgium chocolates. Your trip will conclude with a few amazing days in Iceland. You will discover the natural wonders of the region.

Eligibility

This program is open to all members of the Mason Community including students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public. No academic credit is awarded on Mason Cultural Tour programs.

Program Itinerary*

Day Activity
Day 1  (Friday, March 9)

Flight departure from Washington Dulles International Airport.

Day 2 (Saturday, March 10)

Upon arrival in Amsterdam, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel in the.coastal Netherlands region of Delft to check in. Enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant. Best Western Museumhotels Delft. Furnished with artworks and antiques the hotel offers reception, elevator, bar, all rooms are equipped with private facilities, TV, safe and wifi.
Dinner included.

Day 3 (Sunday, March 11)

After breakfast, take an excursion to Rotterdam, for a three-hour guided tour of this major port city in southern Holland. This modern and dynamic city is home to Europe’s largest seaport, Market Hall, cube houses, various museums, and the Euromast tower.  Afterward, hop on a cruise ship for a relaxing ride to see Rotterdam’s skyline and harbor. After a long day, return to Delft.

Day 4 (Monday, March 12)

Enjoy breakfast then consider an  optional visit to The Hague, also known as the Royal City by the sea. This area is the seat of the government and home to Noordeinde Palace,  Or, today you may wish to do some shopping and walking through the charming Old Town on your own..

Day 5 (Tuesday, March 13) After breakfast, travel to Antwerp, a port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt with history dating back to the Middle Ages. In its center, the centuries-old Diamond District is home to diamond traders, cutters, and polishers.You will visit the Rubenhuis that holds an amazing collection of Rubens art and also the MAS Museum. In the afternoon you will visit a specialized chocolate shop where you can sample the delicious Belgian chocolates.Return to your hotel in Delft.

Day 6 (Wednesday, March 14)

Enjoy a guided tour of Delft, first stopping by the New Church to see the burial place for some of the Netherland’s royalty. Afterward, visit the Old Church which is famous for its immense brick tower. Next, stop by Prinsenhof one of the most attractive corners of Delft, consisting of a picturesque group of buildings from 1400 when it was first a nunnery. Today, the building now serves as a museum and is home to a vast collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings. Afterward, visit a factory where hand-painted Delft Blue porcelain is produced. You’ll have a chance to walk through the factory to see how these beautiful pieces are made. This afternoon you have some added time to explore and walk along the Old Canal seeing many interesting old houses, or you may even rent a bicycle.

Day 7 (Thursday, March 15)

Start the day with an excursion to “Windmill Street” in Kinderdijk, a village in the South Holland province. Here, you will find 18th-century windmills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Gouda, home to its namesake cheese. Visit the impressive stained-glass windows of St. John’s Church before venturing to the Gothic City Hall, famous for its unique architecture. Next, visit a nearby farm for a tasting of the iconic waffles and syrup as well as fresh Gouda cheese and wine. In the afternoon, return to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 8 (Friday, March 16)

Check out of your hotel in Delft and transfer to airport for flight to Iceland followed by transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik. You will have the option to visit Aurora-Reykjavik Northern Lights Center on your own. Then, enjoy a welcome dinner with your group at the hotel or a local restaurant.Fosshotel Reykjavik, Don't forget to watch for the Northern Lights this evening!

Day 9 (Saturday, March 17)

Start your day with breakfast followed by a Golden Circle tour. This full-day tour includes three of Iceland’s major attractions. First, visit Gullfoss (The Golden Waterfall), one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Then, explore the Geysir Area's numerous hot springs, fumaroles, and geysers – including the famous 90-foot tall Strokkur. Then see Þingvellir, where the world's oldest democratic parliament was founded, and the beautiful canyon being formed between two of the earth’s tectonic plates. During your journey, you’ll visit the family-run Friðheimar greenhouse cultivation center for lunch. Learn about how they grow delicious, pesticide-free tomatoes and cucumbers with Iceland’s abundant geothermal heat. Did you know that Iceland is the only country in the world where tomatoes are grown all-year round? At the end of the day, head back to your hotel to relax. Fosshotel Reykjavik.

Day 10 (Sunday, March 18) Enjoy breakfast before checking out of your hotel and Visiting  the Blue Lagoon for a dip. This unique wonder of nature calms the spirit with its pleasantly warm, mineral-rich geothermal water surrounded by a field of black lava. The natural active ingredients – mineral salts, silica and blue green algae – help you relax and unwind while the white silica mud gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin. After your relaxing visit to the hot springs, transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
