Technische Universität München or the Technical University of Munich (TUM) was one of the first universities in Germany to be named a University of Excellence. The university played a vital role in Bavaria’s transition from an agricultural to an industrial state – and accelerated the pace of technological advancement across Europe. TUM has played a vital role in the tecnological advancement of Europe and is renowned for producing a number of Nobel Prize winners. TUM is located in Munich the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps, and is the third largest city in Germany.
Application cycles are open one semester at a time. Applications for the fall/academic year will open around December 1 of the year prior and applications for spring/calendar year will open around July 1 of the year prior.

In order to participate in this program, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Students must have completed at least 45 credits at the time of departure.
- For students applying for fall or academic year programs, this total does not include summer coursework that has yet to be completed.
- Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of application and departure.
- Students planning to study abroad in the last semester of their senior year should discuss this with their GEO program administrator and major advisor as this may affect their ability to graduate on time.
- Recent transfer students cannot study abroad their first semester (not including summer) at Mason.
Make sure you find plenty of primary AND alternate course options at TUM. Schedules are subject to change and registration in your preferred classes is not guaranteed, so you should have sufficient alternate course options. Also, please keep in mind that you must enroll in the equivalency of at least 12 U.S. credits per semester.
If you find the TUM course catalog confusing, go to individual departments' web pages to browse courses in English. Please note that very few courses are offered in English at the TUM Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Chemistry. (see “Application documents” for language certificates and “Courses at TUM”). As a rule, students wishing to study at the TUM Schools of Mechanical Engineering, Medicine or Chemistry are therefore required to provide evidence of their German skills as proof of their ability to follow lectures.
Students are expected to take a full-time course load during their time at TUM. A full-time course load is 30 ECTS units.
This will allow you to transfer between 12-16 credits back to Mason per semester.
When transferring courses back to Mason, the credits will transfer but the grade will not. However, you must receive the equivalent of a "C" or above in order to transfer your credit back. Refer to the table below regarding how grades are converted at TUM.

Course Equivalency and Plan of Study
The Global Education Office has a Course Evaluation and Registration System
(CERS), which you will use to complete the steps needed to evaluate your courses abroad, and see how they will count at Mason. This database is accessible whether you have already applied, or are just beginning to think about studying abroad. Look at the courses in the database. You are by no means limited to these courses. The database shows courses that have already been evaluated. You can request equivalency for any course not yet evaluated, through CERS.
You are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to look at this institution’s courses ahead of time to see how they will match up to your Mason degree requirements. Talk to your academic advisor about what courses you will need to receive credit for during your time abroad to stay on-track for your degree. When looking at courses keep in mind that course schedules can change. We recommend having twice as many courses approved as necessary.
The academic calendar at TUM is quite different from Mason. The fall semester begins in October and ends in late March and the spring semester starts in early April and technically runs until the end of September. However, lectures often end in July. If you are interested in studying at TUM, it is recommended you do so for either the spring semester only or for the academic year.
Students participating in this study abroad program will automatically fulfill the Mason Global Understanding core requirement.
The university works very hard to find accommodation for all exchange students. You will be sent one offer of housing; once you receive it, we recommend that you take it, because the Munich housing market is very competitive, and what you find will inevitably be more expensive than what TUM offers. The TUM Housing Office does its best to find housing for you on the campus where you'll take most of your courses.
The rooms are typically single or double bedroom apartments with kitchenettes and private bathrooms or shared double rooms with community showers and kitchens. Internet access is currently available at all student accommodation. Meals are not provided, but there are student cafeterias on all three campuses where lunch is served at very reasonable prices.
This is a Bilateral Exchange Program. Students are enrolled as regular students at the partner university, pay Mason tuition to Mason, and pay room and board abroad. Students can use the budget sheets located on this page to see what GEO expense estimates.

*Note: This program does not include a group flight. Do not purchase airfare until you are accepted by the partner institution, have confirmed arrival and departure dates, and have secured your visa or visa documentation. When the time comes to purchase airfare, GEO recommends purchasing flexible or refundable tickets and Flight Interruption and Cancellation Insurance, which is sometimes covered by credit cards (check the terms and conditions of yours if using to purchase your flight.)
$200 Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee of $200 for Mason students must be received by the application deadline. This fee is paid online through the MasonAbroad application system.
$300 - $500 Administrative Fee: A non-refundable administrative fee of $300 (for semester length programs) or $500 (for year-long programs) is due by the program Commit By date listed below. This fee is paid online through the MasonAbroad application system.
Mason Tuition: Student’s normal in-state or out–of–state rate. Payment is made through the Mason Bill+Payment system and is due according to the Mason Payment Schedule.
In most cases, financial aid (federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans) can be used to finance study abroad. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the Office of Financial Aid to review their financial aid package. The Office of Financial Aid is the only office that can determine your aid eligibility.
• You can make your final payment in the Mason Bill+Payment system even if you do not see the GEO program charge on your student account.
• George Mason University applies payments to outstanding charges first. If you have an outstanding balance from a previous semester your payments will first go to paying that charge. You will still be responsible for the GEO charge.
Meeting with your financial aid officer prior to applying to study abroad will help you understand if, how much, and when your aid can be used to study abroad.
Confirmation of your financial aid award may not be available until registration and billing for the term in question is final. If aid eligibility changes, or the amount of aid disbursed is lower than anticipated, students are responsible for all remaining account balances or risk late fees, holds on their accounts, and program dismissal.
To assist students in the processing of their financial aid, GEO will communicate with the Office of Financial aid those students who plan to utilize financial aid for their specific study abroad program through their application with GEO. Please note there is no guarantee to students that their aid can be utilized for their specific study abroad program.
If you plan to use federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans to finance your study abroad you must:
- Mark “Yes” to “Do you plan to use Financial Aid to finance your program (federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans)?” in your profile in MasonAbroad.gmu.edu.
- Complete the Financial Aid questionnaire item in your application.

Funding for Pell Grant Recipients:
Pell grant recipients should strongly consider applying to the Gilman International Scholarship Program
. The DAAD of Germany has funded additional scholarships through the Gilman Program to specifically fund students planning to study abroad in Germany.

Once accepted into a program, it will be your responsibility to apply for a student visa and/or residence permit (if required, based on your citizenship). You will receive details on this with your acceptance letter. Do not apply for a visa until after you have been officially accepted. Visit the Embassy of Germany's website for further information. You do not need a visa prior to your arrival to Germany. Upon arrival, however, you are required to obtain a residence permit. You will obtain the residence permit at the appropriate Residents' Registration Office. The TUM International Center will give you more information on obtaining a residence permit during orientation.
Application fee: $200 for Mason students.
Official Transcripts: An official copy of your Mason transcript is required as well as copies of official transcripts from any other college or university you have attended.
Passport Status: If you do not have a valid passport, you should begin applying for one now.
Signature Documents: Read and electronically "sign" the documents.
Questionnaires: Read and complete the documents according to the instructions.
