Program Description:

Challenges Facing Public Administration in China Today

Summer 2018


Visit Beijing, China, as part of the Beijing Exchange Tour, with MPA students from the Hong Kong Baptist University. Dean Rozell has organized this opportunity for 5 Schar graduate students, to have meetings with a variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGO) in mainland China as well as to communicate face to face with Chinese government officials, civil servants, NGO staff and scholars on issues related to the development and practices of public administration in China.

Program Highlights

  • Appraise the challenges facing public administration in China.
  • Differentiate management issues in public administration between mainland China and Hong Kong.
  • Analyze the impact of political, economic and social factors on public administration in mainland China and Hong Kong.
  • Conduct a study to evaluate different management issues in public administration in mainland China.

Course Objectives:

All participants will receive credit for ITRN 702.

By the end of the class, students will be expected to demonstrate his/her ability to:

  • Integrate and apply knowledge related to public administration issues.
  • Analyze the public administration practices in main land China and Hong Kong
  • Evaluate the main factors that shape policy-making and implementation in mainland China
  • Evaluate public administration and social affairs with a comparative  perspective and in a critical but comprehensive manner;
  • Apply knowledge to conduct a research project in a specific area related to public administration.

May 18- Group Departure to Beijing, China
May 19- Arrival to Beijing, Check-in to Hotel, Orientation and Welcome Dinner
May 20- Free time to explore Beijing
May 21- Site Visits and Class
May 22- Site Visits and Class
May 23- Site Visits and Class
May 24- Site Visits and Class, Farewell Dinner with Hong Kong MPA students
May 25- Site Visits and Class
May 26- Day trip to visit the Great Wall of China
May 27- Group flight to Washington Dulles

Program Fee

Enrollment Deadline March 2, 2018.

  • 8 nights of double occupancy accommodation in a local hotel
